Black Life Blues

by Marcus Jade

/

about

This was a song I written a few years back. After Michael Brown was killed by police. Its crazy how even after this time, this song is still relevant. Its makes the song then feel almost melancholy and tangible with everything thats going on now. I hope this song sheds some light on the folks that need it that most.
Thank you.

lyrics

THEY SHOT HIM DOWN
AS THEY STOOD OVER HIM

HIS MOTHER CRIED
AS SHE LAID IN HIS BLOOD

BUT YOU HEAR IT ON THE NEWS
JUST A POOR SOUL GONE AWAY

SO WERE MARCHING ON THE STREETS
CAN YOU HEAR US
BECAUSE WERE TIRED NOW
OF OUR BROTHERS BEING HURT

ANOTHER WHITE BOY SHOT UP A SCHOOL
AND THEY WANT TO SEND HIM HELP

IN THE MIDST OF ALL THAT
POLICE KILLINGS
SLIP AWAY

DID YOU HEAR THE DOG WHISTLERS BARK
THEYLL DISTRACT YOU FROM THE NOISE

I GOT THE BLACK LIFE BLUES
AND IM AFRAID TO LEAVE MY HOME

I DONT WANT NO SUGAR IN MY COFFEE
AND I DONT WANT NO JESUS IN THE SCHOOL
I DONT WANT NO INJUSTICE IN DEMOCRACY
I CANT WAIT TO SEE THE DAY MY PEOPLE RULE
