Blues For The People ( These Corona Times) Quarantine Sessions 6.17.2020

about

This song was inspired by Blues Guitarist Jackie Venson. I recently read an article in a local Austin music blog about her scuffle with the organizers at the Annual Blues on the Green in Austin, Texas. She was taken off the bill for confronting the organizers for asking if the annual event can have an all black blues line-up. her request was not only denied but she was taken off the bill and replaced with other musicians.
I felt her stance was appropriate, but she also asked her city to do more. I'm not an official resident of the city of Austin, but her call out made me write this piece I've been working on for a while. It needs to be reminded in its own way that although the blues is everyone, the people who birthed this American Art Form, the people that made it, and their posterity who still continue the tradition should be respected on every level. This is also a song to let Jackie know I heard her loud and clear, as well as other blues musicians the chance to speak up and say "We are here." We can play these blues in spaces where it is respected and understood by those who know the. truth and its purpose.

lyrics

Woke up this morning
In a room all alone
Knowing that its the season
And they all want me gone

Im living in
In these corona times
If I cant breathe
Then I can lose my life

You see it on the news
And each every town
Black man tryna live his life
He being gone down

He living these corona times
You see that he cant breathe
He bout to lose his life

I pray to lord
And I ask him why
Does my country
Want me to die

Im living in
These corona times
If I can’t breathe
Im gonna lose my life

Everybody on the streets
Began to scream and shout
They know a black life matters
Thats what its all about

We all livin in
These corona
If i cant breathe
Im gonna lose my life.

Lord have mercy,
On My Country
Lord, have mercy
On My Country
